Ecological responsibility

 Preserving living spaces

With each new piece of furniture that we produce, with each kitchen that leaves our factory, we have a responsibility: to make the human benefit as high as possible, while keeping the impact on the planet as low as possible.

This is why we use resources carefully and intelligently; why we use clean energy and use it efficiently; why we continually re-examine our processes to reduce emissions and waste.

The best electricity is electricity not used

We would like to use even clean energy as sparingly as possible In order to find all the adjustments we can make to reduce consumption further, we perform regular energy audits. Measures we have taken over the past 10 years have resulted in energy savings of 20%.

Planing wood creates heat

We have been producing our own heat from wood chips and off-cuts from the factory for many years, and of this we are particularly proud. At our headquarters in Löhne, we are largely independent of fossil fuels such as gas or oil.

We put considerable energy into saving energy.

100% green electricity – Since 2006, all the electricity we have used is green, and thanks to our in-house power station we are nearly independent of fossil fuels.

Minus 18% packaging materials

In the last few years, following the introduction of automated and individualised packaging solutions, we have been able to reduce our recycling materials by 18%.

Our energy-saving journey is our destination

Our kitchens are popular all around the world. All the more reason to ensure resource-efficient transport. This begins with the packaging, which is not only produced from 100% recycled corrugated cardboard, but which in turn can be recycled. In addition, we are continually working on reducing the emissions of our vehicles, for example by motivating our lorry drivers to use less fuel through extra training and bonuses.

If everyone saves, everyone wins

Energy-saving technologies are one important factor. A second factor is us, the people who work at SieMatic. By informing all colleagues and making them aware of potential energy savings, seemingly small steps can lead to big progress.

Optimising products

Quality and design are the visible and tangible parts of our product development, but it is often those parts which are invisible or best avoided altogether which are crucial to sustainability. This is the case with the production process, for example our use of state-of-the-art software-driven off-cut optimisation or of robot-controlled storage of residual material for the recycling of off-cuts. But also at the end of a long kitchen life: for us it is important that our furniture is easy to disassemble and that the materials can be sorted and appropriately disposed of or, even better, recycled.

1,08 m²

All off-cuts which cannot immediately be used elsewhere and which are at least 1.08 m² in size are brought to a robot-controlled and automated interim storage area. In line with requirements, they are then automatically scheduled for new cuts. This guarantees the most efficient use of our materials.

Minimising hazardous materials

Furniture production is not yet possible without any hazardous materials at all. But by using modern laser technology, e.g. innovative laser edging techniques for plain and decor countertops, we are already largely able to work without conventional glues.

We have also been able to replace many chemicals with less harmful substances and are continually reducing the quantities used. We have our own hazardous materials officer and an in-house laboratory, both of which enable us to keep a close eye on these issues, as well as the latest technical developments, so that we are always able to find better alternatives, now and in the future.

Certifying sustainability

Our adherence to strict environmental standards, for example in our product development, production or selection of materials, is certified regularly by a neutral and recognised notified body.

This applies both to national environmental standards, such as DIN EN ISO 9001 and DIN EN ISO 14001 (TÜV-certified) and to international certificates: since 2010 SieMatic has been FSC®-certified (FSC® C100085) and taking wood from controlled cultivation - for sustainably grown forests; since 2019  we have switched our production of composite wood products worldwide to the strict US-CARB II (TSCA Title VI) standards for formaldehyde emissions.

In order to guarantee these high standards at all times, an in-house environmental team performs regular audits throughout the company.

Because we are for the environment,
in climate issues we are neutral.

Establishing environmental protection

As a medium-sized enterprise with over 400 employees worldwide, we are also able to make valuable and routine contributions to environmental protection beyond furniture production. Examples include our use of sustainable, biologically degradable cleaning agents or our strict sorting of waste, both in the factory and in the administration.

Our company separates 20 different types of waste and residual materials. They include many recyclable materials, such as aluminium, packaging paper and cardboard, which are collected for re-use.

Climate-neutral manufacturer

For our certification by the Deutsche Gütergemeinschaft Möbel (DGM)  we made a thorough analysis of our carbon footprint. And it confirmed: in comparison to other companies of our size and within our industry, our emissions are low. As an additional environmental measure, we further reduce our footprint by supporting international projects and acquiring climate protection certificates.
